People who have panic disorders experience real anxiety attacks. Those attacks can break out over and over again in certain situations (crowds, invitations), in certain places (open spaces, bridges, elevators), in specific encounters (spiders, dogs). They are then associated with a type of phobia. Panic attacks can target those affected but can also target you for no reason, out of the blue.
Panic attacks are among the anxiety disorders that tend to attack victims suddenly, without a warning or apparent reason.
Symptoms of panic attacks – from palpitations to dread
People often experience different physical and psychological symptoms during a panic attack, which are usually very intense.
These include, for example:
- Shortness of breath, suffocation
- Fast heartbeats
- Tremor
- Sweat
- Nausea
- Drowsiness
- Feeling dizzy
- Fear of going crazy, suffering a heart attack or dying
Panic attacks increase the intensity within seconds or minutes to a maximum. The heart starts racing so hard that sufferers believe they would fall dead instantly due to the heart attack. Most of the symptoms disappear within a few minutes, but in times it can last for about 30 minutes. What remains is the fear of death, helplessness, emotional dissolution, and tears. A panic attack can be a very distressing experience for those affected.
The key to a panic disorder is to seek help instantly and do not crawl into your home, hiding to avoid anxiety-triggering situations.
Alcohol and other means of distractions are no answer to panic attacks!
